  • camera obscura art lab 1450 Ocean Avenue Santa Monica, CA, 90401 United States (map)

Sympoiesis is a collaborative performance with sculpture, movement, and live music by Camera Obscura Studio Residents Dahn Gim and Alex Wand, with creative assistance from musicians: Odeya Nini, Kathryn Shuman, Luke Williams and choreographer Jay Carlon. Concept for mirrors and sunlight dance by Lindsey Lollie.

The term, “Sympoiesis,” meaning synergistic creation, was utilized by theorist Donna Haraway to emphasize the art of living in deeply troubled times, surviving in discomfort and coexisting with devastation. This mode of thinking emphasizes the reciprocal relationships of human, non-human, living and non-living things. Embracing a web of relations, Sympoiesis examines how beings and objects signal to, amorphously cohere and partially assimilate each other to generate evolving systems.
